Briggs & Stratton P2200 PowerSmart Series Inverter Generator
Briggs & Stratton P2200 PowerSmart Series Inverter Generator is a compact and lightweight power inverter generator, offering stable and reliable power during fishing trips, while camping, being outdoors, during emergencies, or simply when being off the grid.
Briggs & Stratton P2200 features low THD (Total Harmonic Distortions) and is suitable for powering sensitive electronics, charging laptops, smartphones, tablets, 12V batteries, as well as powering home and other appliances.

Briggs & Stratton P2200 manufactures two inverter generators labeled as Briggs & Stratton P2200 - model 030698 that features 230 volts and 50 Hz outputs and model 030651 that features 120 volts and 60 Hz output.
Although these two models are very similar, this article is about Briggs & Stratton P2200 Model 030651 (120V, 60 Hz).
Briggs & Stratton P2200 Generator Features and Specifications
Briggs & Stratton P2200 PowerSmart Series Inverter Generator produces 1700 Running Watts and 2200 Starting Watts. The unit is powered by 111 cc OHV engine, featuring a low-oil automatic shutdown, automatic idle control, and manual recoil start.
Briggs & Stratton P2200 comes with a 1-gallon fuel tank (with no fuel gauge), enabling the unit to operate at a 25% load up to 8 hours according to the Briggs & Stratton official site - some sites claim 6.5 hours runtime @25% load.
Oil capacity is 13.5 ounces (0.4 liters) - exact oil type depends on the outside temperature, but generally, Briggs & Stratton recommends their Briggs & Stratton Warranty Certified Oils, but also other high-quality oils may be used (classified for service SF, SG, SH, SJ or higher). Personally, Synthetic 5W30 oil is safe for use during both low and high temperatures - just to be sure, check the Owner's Manual.
Oil level should be checked before any longer operation, for example, before an 8-hour run @25% load - it is a good practice to check the oil level after each refueling.
Oil should be changed after 100 hours of operation.
Like all other power generators, Briggs & Stratton P2200 should be used only outside, with some distance from people or animals due to the fumes released during operation that contain invisible and tasteless, but very dangerous carbon-monoxide.
Never, but really never operate any power generator indoors!
Note: Briggs & Stratton P2200 is relatively simple to use and maintain power generator, but when it arrives, be sure to thoroughly read the manual and to keep it close to the unit - if something is not absolutely clear, check the Owner's Manual. Better safe than sorry! The worst thing that may happen is to have an unreliable power generator in the case of emergency - this goes for all power generators, not only for Briggs & Stratton P2200!
Unit weighs 54.6 pounds (~24.8 kg) with physical dimensions of 21 x 12.5 x 17.35 inches (~53.3 x 32 x 44 cm). One of the very interesting features is its carrying handle in the form of the letter 'H', allowing one or two adults (two adults recommended) to carry the unit when required.
THD levels are less than 3%, making it suitable for powering sensitive electronic devices and home appliances.
Briggs & Stratton P2200 features three output indicators:
- OK! green LED indicator is ON when the unit operates normally,
- Overload Alarm red LED indicator turns ON when the unit is overloaded (also, this turns the green OK! LED indicator OFF),
- Low Oil Indicator turns yellow when the oil level drops below a certain level and the engine is turned OFF.
Unfortunately, Briggs & Stratton P2200 does NOT feature a Fuel Gauge and Hour Meter.
Noise level is 59 dB at 25% load measured at 21 feet (6.4 m) distance - at first, Briggs & Stratton P2200 doesn't appear as the quietest portable generator, and it is not. But, it is quiet enough do be comfortably used when camping, when powering RVs, charging trolling batteries, etc.
Output ports include two 120V/20A household ports, one 12V 5A DC outlet with a USB adapter.
Briggs & Stratton P2200 features so-called 'Quiet Power Technology' (QPT) that helps the unit run smoothly and more quietly by automatically adjusting the engine speed - otherwise, the engine will run at the full speed.
While the use of QPT switch is recommended, it also has some limitations:
- QPT Switch must be OFF when starting or stopping the engine,
- when using 12V 5 Amps receptacle, the QPT Switch must be OFF,
- when connecting two units in parallel, the QPT switch must be in the same position.
Note: The unit is able to provide 14.16 Running Amps and 18.33 Starting Amps. Since Briggs & Stratton P2200 is a parallel ready unit, if more power is required for powering for example RVs, two units may be connected in parallel - requires an additional Briggs & Stratton 6278 120 Volt Parallel Cable Connector Kit.
When two Briggs & Stratton P2200 generators are connected in parallel, the maximum output power is 3000 watts, not 3400 watts as one may expect.
The unit comes with a 2-year limited residential and 1-year limited commercial warranty - warranty period and terms may change over time, so please, check before purchasing this or any similar unit.
Long Story Short: Briggs & Stratton P2200 power generator feature well balanced design, compact and lightweight construction and is a very reliable unit, when maintained properly.
Unit comes at an affordable price and is well liked by its users, despite not having fuel gauge, hour meter, electric/remote starter (usually found on larger/stronger power generators) and similar.
But, if you are looking for an inverter power generator in 2000 watts class, consider this unit as well - but, always choose according to your own needs and preferences.
And stay safe - power generators are not toys.
