Newport Vessels 36, 46, 55, 62 and 86 Pounds Thrust NV-Series Saltwater Electric Trolling Motors
Newport Vessels NV-Series of saltwater/freshwater electric trolling motors ranges between 36 and 86 pounds of thrust and is excellent choice for most of the applications where such propulsion is required.
These motors are lightweight, affordable, come with many features required for safe use and are easy to use. If you need such motors, consider these electric trolling motors as one of your possible choices.
Newport Vessels NV-Series is designed for transom mount on small boats as the means of main propulsion or on the larger boats for silent trolling and other marine applications.
They should be powered by dual purpose and/or deep cycling trolling batteries and NOT with common cranking/starting batteries, since such use can significantly shorten the operating life of starting batteries.
Being made of mostly non-corrosive materials, these motors are suitable for both saltwater and freshwater use. However, proper maintenance can significantly prolong the operating life and the reliability. After all, nobody wants to have motor malfunction far away from suitable port or at least coast :)
Before first use, be sure to read and to understand the manual.

All motors of NV series require 12 V, except 86 pound motor which requires 24 V for operation.
55, 62 and 86 pound thrust models have rather 'weak' recommended circuit breakers. In fact, maximum allowed current of the 55 pound model is actually larger than the maximum recommended circuit breaker. Such 'weak' circuit breakers can cause many 'false positives' and can be rather annoying, but they protect the motor, battery and rest of electronics and electrics from being damaged if/when propeller hit rocks or get stuck into the seaweed and is unable to spin. Such condition can cause electric motor to draw really large currents and such currents can cause significant damage and even injuries.
Newport Vessels 36 pound model uses 2 blades propeller, while other models use propellers with 3 blades. Propellers are reliable and durable and can withstand and absorb plenty of punishment.
However, treat them properly, since these motors (or electric motors in general) and their propellers are NOT designed for digging trenches in sandy shallows, mowing seaweed, pulverizing sea rocks or anything similar :)
All models have 8 speeds (5 forward and 3 reverse) and for most applications this is enough. However, in the age of integrated circuits and almost zero-resistance output MOSFET transistors, I really prefer electric trolling motors with continuous PWM power adjustment for fine speed tuning during fishing.
Maximum recommended boat size is quite conservative and personally, I like to have power reserve, if something should happen (sudden bad weather, strong currents and similar), especially when using electric trolling motor on the small boat as the main boat engine.
Maximum speed of the 7.5 ft (2.3 m) is rather 'optimistic' - it is the maximum speed of such boat with 200 pounds load on calm water. 7.5 ft inflatable boat can accommodate at least two men and if you add decent battery (at least 85 Ah), fishing tackle, baits, water, food and at least some wind, waves and sea currents, maximum speed drops significantly. Also, speed is given in the mph and not knots! (External link, opens in the new window)
On the other hand, electric trolling motors should have at least some power reserve, so if possible, always try to have little bit stronger motor than recommended, but don't push it too hard, unless really required.
In order to know the status of the battery, all models are equipped with simple '5 Point LED Battery Meter' - it enables user to clearly see the battery status and to return to the port when required.
Recommended accessories with NV-Series - There are several accessories that can come very handy when using electric trolling motors. Here are just few of them.
Newport Vessels Trolling Motor Smart Battery Box Power Center
Having battery stored in marine battery box/power center is highly recommended, especially in smaller boats when there is great danger of water spills and similar (large electric current and water, especially salt water, can cause sparks and even fires).
Smart battery box from Newport Vessels can accommodate 24 and 27 size batteries and has:
- built-in LED battery meter,
- external battery ports,
- integrated 10 A and 60 A circuit breakers,
- non-slip rubber feet,
- an USB charger,
- dimensions: 17" x 12" x 10 " (~43 x 30.5 x 25.4 cm)
This power center is rather lightweight (3 pounds, ~ 1.35 kg) and can fit tight spaces.

Intex Motor Mount Kit
Newport Vessels NV-Series is designed for transom mounts. If the boat has no such mount, it can NOT use electric or gas motors designed for such mounts, unless these mounts are improvised or acquired from the boat's manufacturers.
Intex motor mount kit enables the use of such motors on Intex inflatable boats, it is easy to use, attaches and detaches quickly and is rather cheap.
If you have Intex inflatable boat and want to use electric trolling motors, this mount kit is excellent solution.

Long story short - Newport Vessels NV-Series is excellent and affordable series of electric trolling motors. If you need electric trolling motor or electric motor as the main motor for small boat consider one of them and get a decent battery. Many manufacturers recommend 50 Ah or stronger batteries for their electric trolling motors, since maximum current of electric trolling motors is limited to around 60 Amps.
Personally, I like to have battery which is capable of powering electric motor for at least 2 (two) hours at motor's maximum power - this gives me at least 4-5 hours of fishing time at lower speeds.
