CR1632 Battery Equivalents and Replacements
CR1632 are lithium button cell batteries, commonly used in remote control devices, pet collars, LED lights, medical devices, motherboards and similar.
CR1632 are manufactured by most popular and reliable brands and are easy to find. However, just note that they are often labeled not only as CR1632, but also as DL1632, BR1632, KL1632, ECR1632, KCR1632, etc.
CR1632 Battery Features and Specifications
CR1632 battery is lithium button cell battery, 16 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm in height - hence the label '1632'.
Lithium CR1632 batteries are mostly primary (non-rechargeable) 3V batteries, with the negative electrode made of lithium, while positive electrode is made of most commonly manganese-dioxide.
Note that some lithium batteries feature positive electrode made of carbon-monofluoride.
Manganese-dioxide lithium batteries' labels start with 'C'. Their operating temperature is between -20°C (-4°F) and 60°C (148°F). Lithium CR1632 feature nominal voltage of 3.0 V and a cutoff voltage of 2.0 V, while actual capacity depends on the cutoff voltage of the device, with the typical capacity of CR1632 battery in 130-140 mAh range.
Carbon-monofluoride 1632 batteries are not so common. Their labels start with 'B'.
BR1632 batteries feature broader operating temperature range - between -30°C (-22°F) and 80°C (176°F). Their nominal voltage is 2.8 V, with a cutoff voltage of 2.25 V, with the typical capacity of BR1632 battery in the 110-115 mAh range.
Note: BR1632 and CR1632 are generally interchangeable batteries. Although they feature initialy slighty lower voltage, BR1632 batteries have more stable voltage during use. But, for devices operating in extreme temperatures, BR1632 batteries are recommended over CR1632 batteries.
On the other hand, BR1632 batteries have lower capacity and are intended for low drain operations. Long shelf life of BR1632 batteries is not as advantageous as years ago, since newer CR1632 batteries also feature very low self discharge rate and long shelf life - CR1632 batteries from reputable brands feature 10+ years shelf life.
Recently, rechargeable lithium '1632' batteries have appeared on the market. Their most common label is LiR1632 and nominal voltage between 3.6 and 3.7 volts.
LiR1632 capacity is much lower than non-rechargeable CR1632 or BR1632 batteries, but they can be recharged and discharged up to or even more than 1000 times.
For example, LiR1632 capacity is in the 30-50 mAh range.
Note: LiR1632 should be recharged only with the lithium chargers intended for such batteries.
Also, replacing CR1632 or BR1632 batteries with LiR1632 batteries may be done only if the device operates properly when being powered with 3.6 V battery - it must be clearly stated in the manual of that particular device that it support the use of LiR1632 battery/batteries. This 0.6 - 0.8 volts difference can easily damage electronic devices.
Soldering Tabs or Not?
Some devices have CR1632 batteries soldered directly onto the motherboards.
If you need CR1632 battery with the soldering tabs, the best thing to do is to get such batteries. If you are unable to find them, soldering tabs can be added to standard CR1632 batteries, but it must be done by professional personal since overheating lithium batteries can be dangerous - also, it is NOT done using standard soldering irons :)
Long Story Short: If you need replacement battery for CR1632, DL1632, BR1632, KL1632, ECR1632, KCR1632, or similarly labeled 1632 battery, go for CR1632 battery from reputable brands.
Their CR1632 batteries have at least 5-10 years shelf life, and capacity of at least 130-140 mAh.
