Battery Equivalents and Replacements

LR44, AG13, SG13, LR1154, SR44, SR44SW, 303, 357, A76 Battery Equivalents and Replacements

AG13/LR44/SR44/SR44SW/357 button/coin cell batteries are very popular batteries, commonly found in wrist watches, small flashlights, calculators, some remote control devices, thermometers, laser pointers, and other small electronic units.

According to the IEC standard, this battery should be called LR1154 (alkaline) or SR1154 (silver-oxide). Sometimes shorter, two-digit code is used: LR44 for alkaline and  SR44 (or SR44SW) for silver-oxide batteries.

Many manufacturers use their own names for these batteries, but they also tend to add IEC and other standard codes, including short descriptions of the chemistry and other important features.

LR44/SR44 Battery Features and Specifications

LR44/LR1154 (alkaline) or SR44/SR1154 (silver-oxide) batteries are button/coin cell batteries 11.6 mm in diameter and 5.4 mm in height. Their capacity depends on the used chemistry but also on the cut-off voltage of the used device.

Few notes:

  • AG13 vs SG13: AG13 should be 'alkaline G13,' and SG13 should be 'silver-oxide G13' battery. However, sometimes manufacturers mark silver-oxide batteries with both SG13 (correct) and AG13 (not so correct) to emphasize that their battery is a replacement for AG13/LR44/LR1154 battery.
  • if the battery code starts with the 'L', then it is most probably an alkaline coin cell.
  • if the battery code starts with the 'S', then it is a silver oxide coin cell.
  • if the battery code starts with the 'P', then it is a zinc-air coin cell.
  • if the battery code starts with the 'M' or 'N', then it is a mercury-oxide coin cell. However, due to the presence of mercury, these batteries are no longer in use.
  • if the battery code after the digits contains 'P', then it is the battery with potassium hydroxide electrolyte.
  • if the battery code after the digits contains 'S', then it is the battery with sodium hydroxide electrolyte.
  • if the battery code after the digits doesn't contain 'P' or 'S', then most probably that battery contains an organic electrolyte.
  • if the battery code after the digits contains 'W', then the battery complies with the IEC 60086-3 watch batteries standard.

What is the Voltage of an LR44 Battery?

The voltage of LR44 and other buttons/coin 11.5x5.4 mm batteries depends on the exact battery chemistry, the battery age, temperature, current capacity, etc.

In most situations, nominal voltage is the open-circuit voltage of a brand new battery at room temperature - as soon as the battery is being discharged, the battery voltage drops.

Mercury-oxide batteries are no longer in use due to the mercury content, which is not the most environment-friendly metal - to say the least.

675 p44 batteryZinc-air batteries have slightly lower voltage (1.4 V vs. 1.5 V) when compared with alkaline batteries, but they have a rather large capacity of 600-700 mAh.

These batteries use oxygen from the air and wet electrolyte - prior to the use, the tab is removed, and the air enters the battery. However, when electrolyte dries out, the battery is dead even if it hasn't been depleted by the use.

The price of the battery is acceptable and not higher than the price of other LR44/SR44 batteries.

Silver-oxide batteries have a slightly higher nominal voltage (1.55 V vs. 1.5 V) when compared with alkaline batteries, but unlike alkaline batteries, this voltage remains fairly constant during use, with a cut-off voltage around 1.2V.

Also, silver-oxide batteries have a larger capacity when compared with alkaline batteries.

These batteries are the preferred choice for powering watches, calculators, and similar small electronic devices. Such devices can have reliability issues when being powered by alkaline batteries due to the voltage drop.

Silver-oxide batteries cost slightly more than alkaline batteries, but their features and performances IMHO justify the price difference. When buying larger packages, the price difference is usually negligible.

Alkaline batteries have been on the market for a long time - they are cheap and reliable and have a decent capacity of 110-130 mAh.

Since their voltage drops during use, their capacity depends on the device's cut-off voltage - if it is some digital watch that signals at 1.2V battery voltage that it is time to change the battery, then these batteries are not recommended for such devices.

But, they are good to go for general use in toys, small flashlights, and similar applications.

As one can see, while nominal and cutoff voltages are more or less the same, nominal capacities differ, often depending on the conditions under which those capacities were measured.

LR44 vs. 357 Battery

Both LR44 and 357 batteries are button cell batteries with a few differences:

  • LR44 battery is an alkaline button cell battery, while the 357 battery is based on silver oxide chemistry,
  • 357 battery is designed as a high-drain battery and is, as such, suitable for high-drain applications,
  • 357 battery generally has higher capacity and lower self-discharge rate, although some models sacrifice capacity and self-discharge rate for the high-drain performance,
  • 357 battery has a flatter voltage graph.

All in all, these batteries are compatible up to a point - when the LR44 battery is used instead of the 357 battery, the runtime is shorter due to the voltage drop since the device can cut off much sooner.

Batteries Similar to LR44/SR44/SR44SW

LR44/SR44/SR44SW batteries can be used to replace not just button 11.6x5.4 mm coin cells but also to replace larger batteries as well.

cr11108 lithium 1Lithium non-rechargeable CR11108 or CR1/3N batteries feature 3.0 nominal voltage and nominal capacity in the 160-170 mAh range.

Their diameter is 11.6 mm, and their height is 10.8 mm - exactly the same dimensions of two LR44/SR44/SR44SW batteries stacked vertically.

CR11108 or CR1/3N batteries are commonly used in cameras, calculators, dog collars, gun sights, PDAs, computer motherboards, etc.

Sometimes people replace one CR11108 battery with two LR44/SR44 batteries directly in the device, creating a battery pack with a nominal voltage of 3.1 volts (3.0 volts for alkaline LR44 battery) with a nominal capacity in the 150-200 mAh range (110-150 mAh for alkaline battery).

4lr44 battery4LR44 or 4SR44 battery is a cylindrical battery describing its internal construction with its label.

4LR44/4SR44 batteries are just four LR44 or four SR44SW batteries stacked together to create a battery with a nominal voltage of 6 (4LR44) or 6.2 (4SR44) volts. Their typical capacity is 110-150 mAh for 4LR44 and 150-200 mAh for 4SR44 battery.

Physical dimensions of the 4LR44/4SR44 batteries are 25.2 mm in height and 13 mm in diameter - some manufacturers deliver their devices with plastic battery holders, allowing the use of either 4LR44/4SR44 batteries or four LR44/SR44 batteries.

Note: four LR44/SR44 batteries stacked vertically feature a diameter of 11.6 mm and a height of 21.6 mm, thus requiring the battery holder to fit a 25.2x13 mm battery compartment.

4LR44/4SR44 batteries are used in film cameras, medical instruments, flashlights, dog collars, etc.

LR44/SR44 Battery Safety Concerns

LR44/SR44 batteries are shiny objects that look appealing to curious kids and pets that may swallow LR44/SR44 or any similar small batteries. Most manufacturers package LR44/SR44 and other smaller batteries in the packages labeled as 'kids and pets safe' - this means that even adults will have trouble opening the package and getting the battery out.

However, don't underestimate kids and pets when trying to get something they want, especially if it is forbidden ...

Despite modern batteries not having mercury, cadmium, or similar heavy metals or other dangerous pollutants, button/coin and similar batteries are very dangerous when swallowed - body liquids close the circuit between the anode (negative) and the cathode (positive), causing local electrolysis and buildup of various, very aggressive chemicals, including a sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) which damages the surrounding tissue rather quickly, causing serious injuries or even death.

So, if the LR44/SR44 or any other battery gets swallowed by the kid or pet (or even adult, but why would ...?!), call the emergency services immediately and do as instructed (most often induce vomiting right away - just act as instructed).

Please, this is a serious warning, so act accordingly ...
