Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb Features and Specifications
Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb is made using high-quality materials to make it as durable as possible and to allow the unit to be used in saltwater and freshwater and to withstand damage from operating in shallow and muddy waters - just don't abuse it (too much) and the unit will operate flawlessly.
Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb comes with 40-inch (~101.6 cm) adjustable composite fiberglass shaft, featuring a 1.15-inch (~3 cm) diameter - if the motor or blades hit something under the water, the shaft will bend first and break only under severe stress.
Again, don't abuse this feature!
Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb shaft can be adjusted in height and tilt, and it also features a direction lock option.
Unit comes with a 3-blade fiberglass propeller, designed for low-noise trolling/fishing and boating in general.
Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb requires two 12V lead-acid batteries connected in series for a total of 24 volts. The unit already comes with 4-feet (~1.2 m) electric cables - to decrease the energy losses, it is recommended to keep the batteries close to the electric trolling motor.
Newport Vessels L-Series 86 lb electric trolling motor is a rather lightweight unit, weighing ~25 pounds (~11.3 kg) without batteries, which are not included.
The unit comes with a 6-inch (~15 cm) telescopic handle featuring 8 speeds (5 forward, 3 reverse) and 10-point LED battery meter.
A 10-point LED battery meter is intended for monitoring the lead-acid batteries.
The use of lithium batteries is not recommended in general, but if You consider using them, be aware that the battery meter is not providing accurate information when the lithium 24 battery is hooked up to the motor.
The maximum discharge current is 48 Amps, which is 1152 Watts @24V - Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb motor "feels" like ~1.5 HP outboard motor.
Also, to protect the motor from damage by excess current, the use of a 50 Amps fuse is highly recommended.
Generally, Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb motor is intended for boats up to 16+ feet (~4.9 m), with the maximum speed of the 7.5 feet (~2.3 m) boat with 200 pounds load of around 4.5-5 mph (7-8 km/h).
According to the manufacturer, a pair of 12V 50Ah batteries is enough for 1.04 hours of trolling at full power, which is not correct - when the lead-acid batteries are discharged at a 1-hour rate, their actual capacity drops down to 50-70% of their nominal (20h) capacity.
For example, Mighty Max ML75-12 is a very popular 12V 77Ah (10h, 75Ah) AGM deep-cycle battery which is capable of delivering 46.5 Amps for 1 hour, down to 10.5 volts for a 1 hour capacity of 46.5 Ah (~60.4% of its nominal (20h) capacity).
So, if You plan on using two Mighty Max ML75-12 AGM batteries with your Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb motor, You can expect these batteries to power your motor at almost full throttle for one hour.
And if the thrust is decreased, one may expect much longer runtimes on a single battery pack charge.
Note: Newport Vessels L-Series 86 lb electric trolling motor is rather simple to use and maintain electric transom saltwater trolling motor, but when the unit arrives, be sure to read the manual (Owner's Guide) thoroughly in order to get accustomed to your new trolling motor.
Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb Thrust vs. Newport Vessels NV-Series 86lb Thrust Electric Trolling Motor
Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb motor has many similarities with the Newport Vessels NV-Series 86lb electric trolling motor, including 24V operation, 86lb maximum thrust, 48 Amps maximum discharge current, 50 Amps recommended circuit breaker, 8 speeds (5F, 3R), telescopic handle, 3-blade propeller, composite fiberglass shaft, etc.
But, they also differ in few important details:
- Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb comes with a 40-inch composite fiberglass shaft, while Newport Vessels NV-Series 86 lb features a 36-inch composite fiberglass shaft,
- Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb features 10-Point LED Battery Meter, while Newport Vessels NV-Series 86lb features 5-Poing LED Battery Meter,
- Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb is white in color, while Newport Vessels NV-Series 86lb is black in color.
Both units are very popular high-thrust 24V electric trolling motors, so when choosing, be sure to choose according to your own needs and requirements.
Long Story Short: Newport Vessels L-Series 86lb is a tough, durable and versatile 24V 40-inch shaft 86lb thrust electric trolling motor.
Clearly, it is overkill for kayaks and similar ultralight vessels, but inflatable boats, pontoons, sailboats, and similar vessels can benefit from 86lb thrust.
And if You are not in a hurry, decreasing the throttle a little bit can significantly prolong the runtime of the batteries.
