YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS Powersports Batteries

YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS are rather popular starting/cranking batteries commonly found in mid and high-range motorcycles, snowmobiles, lawn mowers, boats, ATVs, and similar.

Modern YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries are generally Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries that are very resistant to vibrations and mechanical damage, prolonging their operating lifetime and increasing reliability. However, even such batteries must be replaced occasionally...

YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS Batteries Features and Specifications

YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries feature the same physical dimensions, but they differ in performances.

Their physical dimensions are (L x W x H) 6.875 x 3.4375 x 6.125 inches (175 x 87 x 155 mm), while their weight depends on the their chemistry - lead-acid YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries on average weigh 11 - 14 pounds (~5 - 6.35 kg), while lithium YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries weigh 3-3.5 pounds (~1.36 - 1.6 kg), rarely more.

Lead-acid YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries are mostly sealed AGM and sometimes Gel-cell batteries, with the flooded models not being very popular anymore.

YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries differ in performances - YTX20L-BS batteries on average feature 18 Ah 10h capacity and ~270 CCA rating, while YTX20HL-BS batteries features similar 10h capacity (~18 Ah), but their average CCA rating is ~310 Amps.

Note: the easiest way to remember the difference is to remember that 'H' in the YTX20HL-BS label stands for 'High(er) Performances'.

While this ~40 Amps CCA difference doesn't look like a large difference, it can be very important in high-end applications.

Sealed AGM and Gel-cell batteries are much simpler to maintain, they are very vibration resistant, can operate in almost any position, and the corrosion of the battery terminals is minimal due to no acid leaks.

Both YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries feature a negative terminal on the battery's left side (hence the 'L - left' as part of the label) and a positive terminal on the right side.

Note: some YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries feature both positive and negative terminals in pairs and can be used as both YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries and as YTX20-BS and YTX20H-BS batteries.

Lithium YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries are not as common as lead-acid batteries, but they are also present on the market. The main advantage of lithium batteries is their lightweight design - with an average weight of 3 - 3.5 pounds, they are ~8 - 11 pounds lighter than similar lead-acid batteries.

However, although lithium batteries have even higher starting currents and are able to crank rather large engines, they also have smaller capacity - if your vehicle has a parasite load of some kind (alarm, remote lock, and similar), even a very small parasite load can discharge 6-10Ah battery relatively quickly.

Also, weight savings of 8-11 pounds on vehicles that weigh several hundred pounds is almost unnoticeable, unless You are a pro rider.

But, some people prefer lithium batteries and their ability to easily crank larger engines, and the weight savings they offer.

How to Charge YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS Batteries?

If the YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries are used in the vehicle that features its own charging system, let that charging system take care of the battery.

Even lithium YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries come with the Battery Management System (BMS) that allows charging using onboard vehicle's charging system, making the transition from the lead-acid to the lithium batteries much easier.

However, when the battery is being charged outside of the vehicle, one must be careful when choosing the battery charger - lithium batteries should be charged only with the battery chargers intended for the lithium batteries or using an AGM battery charger that features dedicated lithium battery charging mode.

Lead-acid YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries should be charged using smart AGM battery chargers that analyze the battery first and charge the battery according to the battery's condition.

YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries should be charged with the battery chargers in the 1.5 - 2.0 Amps range. Stronger battery chargers can recharge the batteries even faster, but too strong charging current can shorten the operating lifetime of the battery.

Another important feature of the smart battery chargers is that, after the battery is fully recharged and the cells equalized, they automatically switch into the maintenance mode, keeping the batteries fully charged without overcharging them.

Long Story Short: If You are looking for a YTX20L-BS or YTX20HL-BS battery, go for the batteries from reputable brands, tried and tested by numerous users in real-life situations.

Although the difference between YTX20L-BS and YTX20HL-BS batteries is not significant, for high-end applications YTX20HL-BS batteries are recommended choice. But, in most situations, the 30-40 Amps CCA difference is not that important.
