Renogy 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Pure Gel and Hybrid Gel Batteries, models Renogy RNG-BATT-GEL12-100 ('Pure Gel') and Renogy RBT100GEL12-G1 ('Hybrid Gel'), are two rather popular deep cycle batteries, especially the older 'Pure Gel' model, with the 'Hybrid Gel' still being rather new model on the market.

Both 'Pure Gel' and 'Hybrid Gel' batteries are deep cycle batteries intended for cycling or standby applications not requiring extra large currents - these batteries are not suitable for starting/cranking applications, especially the older 'Pure Gel' model.

Renogy RNG-BATT-GEL12-100 ('Pure Gel') and Renogy RBT100GEL12-G1 ('Hybrid Gel') batteries are Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) gel-cell batteries, featuring nominal voltage of 12 volts and nominal capacity of 100 Ah. They use heavy calcium-alloy grids, optimized for deep cycle and long standby applications.

When compared with similar AGM batteries, both models tolerate more charging/discharging cycles and have longer standby life. However, due to the gel-type electrolyte, charging and discharging currents of both batteries is lower than currents of deep cycle AGM batteries.

For short, if you need more power, go for AGM batteries, but if you want sealed lead-acid batteries that can be charged and discharged on a daily basis practically for years or to be in standby for many years, go for deep cycle gel batteries.

Due to its length, Renogy RNG-BATT-GEL12-100 ('Pure Gel') belongs to the BCI Group 30H, although not by much - most sources claim that it is Group 31 battery and most battery compartments being able to accept group 31 batteries are able to accommodate this battery as well.

Should You choose this battery, don't forget that its length is 13.2 inches, and NOT 13.0 inches or less.

Renogy RBT100GEL12-G1 ('Hybrid Gel') is true Group 31 battery and can easily fit any battery compartment intended for these batteries.

While both batteries feature 100Ah nominal capacity (discharged for 20h), as the current is increased surprisingly 'Hybrid Gel' model features faster capacity loss due to the increased discharge current.

But, 'Hybrid Gel' tolerates higher currents without adverse effects, and features maximum discharge current of 1000 Amps for 5 seconds, while 'Pure Gel' model doesn't state maximum discharge current.

Typically for lead-acid battery, Renogy 'Pure Gel' battery loses its effective capacity as the discharge current is increased.

Nonetheless, 'Pure Gel' model can provide 335 Amps for 5 minutes after which battery must be given some time to 'rest' and then it must be recharged as soon as possible with intelligent SLA battery charger, using setting for the Gel batteries.

Just like 'Pure Gel', Renogy 'Hybrid Gel' battery also loses its effective capacity as the discharge current is increased, even faster than 'Pure Gel' - for example, 1 hour capacity of the 'Pure Gel' battery is 63.5 Ah (down to 9.6 volts) and 59.3 Ah (down to 9.6 volts) for 'Hybrid Gel', which is kind of surprising considering lower internal resistance of 'Hybrid Gel' model and allowed larger charging/discharging currents.

When 'Hybrid Gel' battery is discharged, the best way to charge it is the same like charging 'Pure Gel' model - use intelligent SLA battery charger, set it to 'Gel Battery' and let it charge the battery fully.

Note: Thanks to the differences in design and electrolyte, 'Hybrid Gel' can be charged two times faster (30 Amps max. vs 15 Amps max. charging current), saving time and decreasing the time the battery is not fully charged - very important for standby backup/security/medical systems.

As one can see, AGM models feature stronger charging and discharging currents when compared with 'Pure Gel' models. However, AGM batteries have shorter Standby Life and lower number of charging/discharging cycles.

'Hybrid Gel' sits between AGM and 'Pure Gel' batteries, offering long Standby Life and relatively strong charging/discharging currents.

Renogy 12V 100Ah Pure Gel and Hybrid Gel Batteries as Sump Pump Batteries

As backup sump pump batteries, Renogy deep cycle gel batteries provide the user with low maintenance power source with extra long standby life (10-12 years).

Operating time of the sump pump being powered by one (or more) of these batteries depends on the sump pump power, which varies greatly.

Note: If You plan to connect your sump pump to the redundant power supply (highly recommended), You will need to know actual power requirements of your sump pump (for example, 1/2 HP) and then to find suitable power converter (basically, an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)) designed for sump pumps that feature 120V AC and 12V or 24V DC power inlets and (at least) one 120V power outlet.

On average, sump pump battery requirements are:

- 1/2 HP: ~35 Amps@12 volts,

- 3/4 HP: ~50 Amps@12 volts,

- 1 HP: ~70 Amps@12 volts, ~35 Amps@24 volts,

- 1.5 HP: ~50 Amps@24 volts, ~35 Amps@36 volts.

Note: for safety reasons, we have already calculated power losses of emergency power units, but just in case, check the actual requirements of your emergency power units.

Renogy 12V 100Ah gel batteries are able to provide these currents easily:

- 35 Amps: 'Pure Gel' ~2h, down to ~10.6 volts; 'Hybrid Gel' ~2h, down to 9.8 volts,

- 50 Amps: 'Pure Gel' ~70-75 minutes; 'Hybrid Gel' ~1h, down to ~11.0 volts,

- 70 Amps: 'Pure Gel' ~48-52 minutes; 'Hybrid Gel' at least 40 minutes (at the moment, there are no discharge charts for 'Hybrid Gel' for discharge times under 1 hour).

Although 'Pure Gel' has larger internal resistance due to the differences in gel electrolyte, it features better discharge characteristics when being discharged with stronger currents - it is more efficient.

Also, 'Pure Gel' can withstand more charging/discharging cycles than 'Hybrid Gel', but this should not be very important for sump pump battery - if it is, then there is something wrong with local utility services (electric power, in this case), for sure!

However, 'Hybrid Gel' can be charged much faster than 'Pure Gel' - twice as fast: with 30 Amps maximum charging current, 'Hybrid Gel' battery can be fully charged in ~4 hours (~5 hours, as safety margin), and with 15 Amps maximum charging current, 'Pure Gel' battery can be fully charged in ~8 hours (~10h as safety margin).

This allows 'Hybrid Gels' to be ready for another power outage much faster than 'Pure Gels'.

Note: Again, if You plan on connecting more batteries in parallel/series in order to increase capacity/voltage, be sure NOT to mix battery types - even 'Pure Gel' batteries should NOT be mixed with 'Hybrid Gel' batteries and especially NOT with wet/flooded and/or AGM batteries. When making such battery packs, always go for the exactly same battery model from the same manufacturer, preferably from the same battery batch!

Similarly, Renogy 12V 100Ah 'Pure Gel' and 'Hybrid Gel' batteries may be used as excellent trolling motor batteries, RV house batteries, UPS backup batteries, security/medical batteries etc.

Which one should You choose depends on your actual need - if You need the battery that can withstand larger number of charging/discharging cycles and is able to provide slightly more power, go for 'Pure Gel' model. On the other hand, if the charging speed is of importance, especially if the battery must be charged in 5 hours or even less, then go for 'Hybrid Gel'.
